Students gathered in the McMaster Students Union board room with councillor Brian McHattie to discuss setting priorities for community improvements in the neighbourhood.

If you had $1.5-million to help improve our neighbourhood, how would you spend it? McMaster students can help answer that question by taking part in an online survey to set priorities for community improvements in the neighbourhoods around McMaster.

The Ward 1 Participatory Budgeting process is spearheaded by Councillor Brian McHattie who represents the ward that is home to McMaster. The City of Hamilton sets aside $1.5-m for use in the ward for capital projects, such as improving transit shelters, enhancing street lighting or bettering parks.

McHattie visited with student representatives and leaders during Welcome Week inviting them to make suggestions on how to invest the funds. He encouraged them to spread the word to other students who have until September 16 to make their suggestions on how to improve our community.

Once the ideas have been submitted a final list of the most popular will be posted online and community members can vote for their favourites.

During the meeting, several students made suggestions including calls for better street lighting on Emerson Drive, increased and improved bus shelters on city routes, better route signage and information at bus stops and improved maintenance and landscaping along the Rail Trail to enhance pedestrian safety.

Everyone is encouraged to participate.
