Honorary degree recipient to speak at rounds event

Sewankambo is recognized as a global leader in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa, is dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Makerere University in Uganda, and has been involved extensively in research projects dealing with infectious disease, health care training and delivery in Africa, and the obstacles faced in translating research to policy.

His topic for the rounds event is Bridging the worlds of research and policy in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda: The Regional East African Community Health (REACH) Policy Initiative. The goal of REACH is to improve people's health and health equity in East Africa through more effective use and application of knowledge to strengthen health policy and practice.

While momentum has been building since the early 1990s for more evidence-informed health system services and policies, the reports and publications that have been generated are not being utilized for policy-making processes and practices.

Sewankambo's one-hour presentation on this subject will be held in Room 1A3 of the Health Sciences Centre, and is open to everyone.

The rounds event is sponsored by the Collaborations for Health initiative, and the Health Information Research Unit. Collaborations for Health is a University-wide project aimed at promoting and increasing inter-disciplinary health-related research and positioning McMaster as the premier health university in the country.
