More than 350 students from four local high schools will be at McMaster today to prepare for real life situations in the business world.

The School of Business is hosting the second annual DECA case competition. Students in Grades 9-12 from four Hamilton high schools – Parkside, Waterdown, Saltfleet and Sir John A MacDonald – are participating in the regional competition, hoping to advance to the provincials in December and the international competition in Dallas, Texas.

Students will compete in about 20 categories, ranging from apparel & accessories, retail merchandising, food marketing, marketing management and vehicles and petroleum. Students have the option of competing individually or in a team. All students will write a 100-question multiple choice test to judge their knowledge in these areas. They also will compete in an oral case study accounting for 50 per cent of their overall mark. The students will be given case studies, which they will present in front of a panel of judges, composed of 30 judges from local businesses.

The event is presented by DECA, an association of marketing and business students that presents tough business challenges to young people to help them build leadership skills. Currently, more than 80 Ontario high schools and 3,800 students are involved in DECA, which is driven entirely by teacher volunteers and a student executive.
