The McMaster Alumni Association (MAA) is looking to reward a few good volunteers.

The MAA is now receiving nominations for the Albert Lager Prize for Student Initiative Award, given to McMaster's hardest working, most accomplished student volunteers.

To be considered, nominees should have significantly contributed to their faculty, program or the University and its students, improved the quality of student life, shown leadership in university affairs or demonstrated support to the MAA for a minimum of one full year.

Chryslyn Pais, one of last year's award winners, was chosen for her dedication to introducing students to the idea of being good citizens.

"She was keen on integrating academics with civic engagement," said Adam Kuhn, manager of the Office of Community Service Learning and Civic Engagement and Pais' nominator. "She showed real leadership in getting students involved in the civic process and that's why she was given this prestigious award."

Former recipient Justin Losier was given the award for his involvement with the Peer Helper program, the Mary E. Keyes Leadership program and Welcome Week planning, amongst other things, and said he was more than honoured to be considered.

"As students we're exposed to some really great opportunities at McMaster," he said. "It's our duty to give back to the community by volunteering where we can."

Nomination information can be found here and nominations can be submitted to Danielle Roy in the Office of Alumni Advancement by March 31, 2010. All nominations must include the name and contact information of at least one faculty, staff or committee chairperson reference. It is strongly recommended that those nominations submitted by student peers be accompanied by a letter of support from a faculty or staff member.

Winning students will be recognized at the Alumni Gallery and MAA Awards induction ceremony on June 3 in CIBC Hall in the McMaster University Student Centre.
