This year's theme is “It's All About Valuing People.” Stress, time pressures and work/life balance conflicts are challenges that most of us face at work or at home. Usually unintentionally, relationships can erode under pressure.

In today's fast-paced world, it is imperative that organizations and the individuals that make them remember to value colleagues and themselves.

For the fifth year, the Healthy Workplace Group, consisting of a volunteer team of McMaster employees from diverse areas supported by the Employee Work Life Services Unit of Human Resources Services, has developed a week of activities to educate and entertain.

Highlights of the free events include:

Monday, Oct. 22:

Mary Ann Baynton, executive director of Mental Health Works, an initiative of the Canadian Mental Health Association, will present a keynote on Awareness of Workplace Mental Health. The talk starts at 11:30 a.m. in CIBC Hall.

With one in 10 Canadians experiencing mental health concerns, you may know a friend, family member or colleague who is affected. Learn how to reduce fear and discomfort about mental health concerns and increase your ability to respond supportively.

Wednesday, Oct. 24:

Meet three-time Olympian and holistic nutritionist Joanne Malar at 5 p.m. at Goodness Me on Locke Street and learn about healthy eating choices. Then take a trip down the aisles to put the theory into practice.

Thursday, Oct. 25:

Learn about on-campus services at the Open House in CIBC Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. You can also confidentially find out your bone density, blood glucose level and BMI, among other tests. Try some healthy snacks and enter a draw for fantastic prizes, including iPods, bikes, camping equipment and more.

There are also lunchtime events throughout the week, including tai chi, relaxation, yoga, nutrition and the Pulse climbing wall. Check out the website for details.

You can register for these events on the Healthy Workplace Week website or e-mail healthyworkplace@mcmaster.ca.
