Healthy aging, Movember money and a perfect student

McMaster is known for making a positive impact on the local, national and international stages. Each week, The Office of Public Relations highlights a few of the many McMaster stories making the news.

Research:

CBC’s The National featured Parminder Raina (Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics), speaking about his research as director of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, in a piece about healthy aging. The piece was repackaged for CBC online.

The Globe and Mail, The Montreal Gazette, Vancouver Sun, Ottawa Citizen, and CBC Radio in Toronto (Here and Now), Ottawa and Thunder Bay all carried stories about a guide by John You (Medicine) and others for involving patients more in planning their end-of-life care. The Citizen carried two letters about the story.

The Hamilton Spectator published a story about Khalid Al-Nedawi (Medicine) receiving a $200,000 research grant for prostate cancer research. The grant comes from money raised by the Movember campaign.

Teaching, learning and student success: 

The Toronto Star published a story and photo on Ben Li, an incoming Health Sciences student who finished high school with a 100 per cent average and is a nationally ranked table-tennis player. The Star published a separate story about Ryan Gotesman, another high achiever who is also coming to study Health Sciences at McMaster after achieving an impressive 99.7 per cent average.

The Hamilton Spectator published a piece on L.R. Wilson Hall, the new liberal arts complex now under construction. The piece included an interview with Charlotte Yates (Dean, Social Sciences) and two renderings of interior spaces.

Expert opinion: 

CTV News, Global News and CHCH-TV and Bloomberg News all interviewed Manish Kacker (Marketing) on Loblaw’s acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart.

The Hamilton Spectator asked Jim Quinn (Biology) about the City of Hamilton’s challenges in saving the endangered ash trees of Gore Park.

On the day of the federal cabinet shuffle, 900 CHML interviewed Peter Graefe and Henry Jacek (both of Political Science) for two different shows. Jacek also appeared on CHCH TV and Graefe also spoke to CKTB in St. Catharines.

CHCH TV and 900 CHML Radio interviewed Marvin Ryder (Marketing) on the Loblaw-Shoppers Drug Mart deal and Detroit seeking bankruptcy protection, respectively, while The Hamilton Spectator talked to Peter Graefe (Political Science) about why the Detroit situation would be unlikely ever to unfold in Canada.

Feature story:

CBC Radio’s national popular culture program, Q, and The Canadian Press interviewed filmmaker Ivan Reitman, a McMaster graduate and honorary doctorate recipient, who spoke at length about his formative experiences in university. Among the outlets to publish the CP story were The Hamilton Spectator and CBC Hamilton.
