Health Sciences Library receives second architectural award

Not only is it a busy resource for students, faculty and health care professionals from across the city, it has won the City of Hamilton's Urban Design and Architecture People's Choice Award.

The award was presented by Mayor Fred Eisenberger to Dr. John Kelton, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the city council meeting last night.

The award was voted on by the general public through votes cast on the City of Hamilton website. The selection followed the biennial Urban Design and Architectural awards the city announced last month, when the Health Sciences Library took the Award of Excellence for Architecture in the juried competition.

McMaster took two of four awards of excellence, as the Department of Family Medicine's Stonechurch Family Health Centre on Upper Ottawa Street took the award for adaptive reuse for its innovative renovation of a former insurance company space in a suburban strip mall environment.

Last night, Kelton thanked the mayor, councillors and the members of the planning and development staff who organized the biennial awards to celebrate high quality urban design and its contributions to a high quality of life in the community.

“Having a beautiful city makes it easier to recruit the very best medical and health care scientists from around the world to come to McMaster and Hamilton,” he said.

He also thanked McCallum Sather Architects and Dineen Construction for being able to create the new space while the library remained open.

Kelton said McMaster is looking forward to working with the province and the city to provide more architectural excellence in the creation of family health centre in downtown Hamilton. The project has received a $10-million donation from Hamilton businessman David Braley.
