Have your say: Updating McMaster’s campus plan

McMaster is updating its Campus Master Plan and there is a role for everyone in the community.

The Master Plan was drafted in 2002 and updated in 2008. It provides a long-term framework that guides development of the campus. It spells out the approach that includes a commitment to a pedestrian-priority centre campus, while establishing guidelines for future development.

With new developments on campus and the establishment of significant off-campus locations such as the Ron Joyce Centre and the David Braley Health Sciences Centre, the timing of the update is opportune.

This 30-year vision is updated regularly to ensure it remains relevant to McMaster’s needs and continues to support the University’s Academic Plan.

“McMaster’s campus must appropriately reflect our academic and research excellence, while supporting our commitment to the community,” says Mohamed Attalla, associate vice president facilities and chief facilities officer who is leading the update of the Plan. “We are working to promote and preserve the qualities that make our campus special, while making sure there is a strategy over time to allow for continued investment in our University.”

The original plan was conceived after widespread consultations with students, faculty, staff, the neighbours and the city. That inclusive approach will be continued for this update.

On November 3, a number of workstations will be set-up across campus for students, faculty, staff and members of the public to provide opinions on the campus experience, existing spaces and possible new spaces and design features.

“This update comes at an important time,” Attalla says. “The historic investment in the LRT which will intersect with the campus and McMaster’s leadership in sustainability need to be reflected in the plan.”

For those who cannot participate in person on Nov. 3, a website will be launched to allow you to have your say.
