DeGroote today cut the ribbons at McMaster University to officially open three international level research institutes which are pledged to advancing human knowledge in the regeneration of human stem cells, the prevention and cures of infectious disease and the development of solutions to chronic pain.

The institutes were part of the vision outlined at the announcement of his $105-million gift to health sciences at McMaster University in December, 2003. The institutes include:

  • The Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research, led by scientific director Gerry Wright, is dedicated to improving understanding of infectious disease so new and better methods for prevention and treatment can be developed
  • The Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Pain Research and Care, with Dr. Akbar Panju as the medical director, has a focus on understanding the underlying mechanisms of chronic pain to develop innovative prevention, diagnosis and treatment strategies
  • The McMaster Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute, headed by scientific director Mick Bhatia, has the vision of advancing cancer research as Canada's leader in the investigation of human stem cells
  • “All of these institutes address major challenges in health care and treatment, and they all provide for wide collaboration among scientists from many disciplines,” said Peter George, McMaster University's President and Vice-Chancellor. “Their research missions, along with the associated new facilities, make McMaster a most attractive destination for top scientists and clinicians who want to improve health care.”

“These institutes are yet another outstanding example of how Michael DeGroote's vision has propelled the University forward.”

All of the institutes are based in the Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Learning and Discovery.
