This year, more than 250 certificates and diplomas were awarded in many subjects including accounting, addiction education, management studies, metallurgy, case management and web design.

Graduands and their families were welcomed by McMaster Chancellor Lynton Wilson and Provost Ilene Busch-Vishniac, as well as the McMaster Association of Part-Time Students (MAPS) President Elaine Marion. Both the provost and the Chancellor congratulated the students on their accomplishments, noting the unique challenges adult learners face when balancing educational, career and family commitments. Bush-Vishniac also commended those gathered for embodying a lifelong passion for learning and inspiring others to do the same.

“Our students value our commitment to academic quality,” said CCE Director Tracey Taylor-O'Reilly. The demand for our services continues to grow at an unprecedented rate. McMaster's enrolments have been increasing at a rate of between 15 and 20 percent per year. At the same time, we continue to be recognized as a leader for quality and innovation.”

Along with several prizes for academic achievement awarded to students, instructor Carol Tristani earned the 2009 CCE Instructor Award for her exceptional dedication to her students and her passion for life-long learning. Tristani's students describe her as continually going above and beyond, outside of regular classroom hours, to ensure they receive all of the support they need to succeed. The dedicated instructor has volunteered to pilot new projects from on-line learning systems, for instructor committees and for distance course development.

Terry Flynn, assistant professor in the DeGroote School of Business and Rick Beith, assistant textbook buyer for Titles Bookstore were also recognized for their contributions to CCE. Flynn was instrumental in developing the public relations program and reviewed its curriculum and helped determine its overall strategy and positioning. Beith has supported continuing education students by working proactively with CCE staff to ensure students have timely and convenient access to course materials.

The ceremony was jointly hosted by CCE and MAPS.
