Colangelo received the best paper award during the conference sponsored by the International Society for Computers and their Applications, held in Honolulu recently. It was chosen from among 108 submissions from 28 countries, some authored by established researchers and industry experts.

Entitled A Complex Dynamic Model for Cancer Growth and Metastasis, the paper described an enhanced mathematical model for cancer growth that was utilized to create a computer graphic simulation program to visually represent how cancer develops.

Collaborators on the project and article were Jon Stone of McMaster's Department of Biology, and Phedias Diamandis from the University of Toronto.

The paper was cited as being well written, precise and dealing with an important and sensitive matter. It illustrated the benefits of computer-supported interdisciplinary research and opens new perspectives for further work on dynamic modeling of cancer growth and metastasis.
