The additional service will provide commuters, especially students, with another option for getting to campus on the weekend.
“For years, we've been asking for weekend service because students have things to do not just Monday to Friday, but weekends too,” said Daryl Bender, co-ordinator of McMaster's All-modes Commuting and Transportation (ACT) Office. He added that last winter, his student employee was assigned to write a report asking GO Transit to provide weekend service.
Bender said taking public transit is often more cost-effective than driving to campus: “Look at the cost of gas, wear and tear on your car, and the cost of parking.”
The McMaster GO bus connection to Lakeshore trains is also changing, with most train/bus transfers at the Aldershot GO/VIA Station instead of at the Burlington GO Station. The Lakeshore connection is also starting much earlier for those who have business meetings in the GTA.
McMaster's GO Bus Terminal officially opened in April. Located between the Mary E. Keyes Residence and H.G. Thode Library, the new terminal features five bus bays, three heated shelters and large platforms. During the school year, the terminal handles more than 2,000 rides per day.
The HSR will also introduce changes in September, including Beeline service to University Plaza in Dundas and the installation of bike racks on all buses.
