The newly created Go Eng Girl campaign will be hosted by the Faculty of Engineering on Saturday, Oct. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. McMaster is one of 15 participating universities across Ontario.
Enrolment of women in post secondary engineering studies is declining or remaining static across Canada. Go ENG Girl, an initiative of the Ontario Network of Women in Engineering (ONWIE), was developed to address this issue.
“This event will help us introduce engineering to young women and describe the many appealing career opportunities this profession has to offer,” said Heather Sheardown, chair of the Women in Engineering Committee and associate professor in chemical engineering at McMaster University. “The girls will meet and talk with female engineers who will share their experiences first hand. We hope this will help dispel continuing stereotypes about the engineering profession as being male only and provide engineering as a career option for bright young women.”
Attendees will meet women currently studying engineering and learn about some of the amazing things women engineers are doing. They will also participate in hands-on activities such as the Roller Coaster Design Project, where they will discover how roller coasters work.
Participants will also learn about engineering-related activities and opportunities outside of the classroom, from teams such as Formula SAE, Solar Car, Robotics, Aero Glide, Engineers Without Borders and mentoring organizations such as Women in Science and Engineering.
Go ENG Girl is presented by The Ontario Network of Women in Engineering (ONWIE) with the support of the Council of Ontario Deans of Engineering, the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE), ACTUA, Agilent Technologies Canada Inc., the Lassonde Family Foundation, Inco Limited, Falconbridge, Pratt & Whitney, MDA, Zenon, IBM and The Woodbridge Group.
