Getting squeaky clean for a good cause

We all shine on. This year, the McMaster shinerama campaign is attempting to raise $120,000 to benefit cystic fibrosis research. The campaign begins Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. during the height of Welcome Week.
Dust off those old patent leather shoes, Hamilton. Or better yet, let Shinerama do it for you.
As part of this year’s Welcome Week festivities, McMaster’s 48th Shinerama campaign in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada begins this week.
The annual affair is the largest post-secondary fundraiser in Canada, involving more than 65 schools from across the country raising money for cystic fibrosis (CF) research and treatment.
The disease attacks the lungs and digestive system, and is the most common and fatal genetic disease amongst young Canadians.
“Last year alone, the national Shinerama campaign raised over $1 million. McMaster students contributed almost $110,000 to that total, making the University the second largest fundraising school in all of Canada,” said Kyle Diab, Shinerama & Terry Fox coordinator with the MSU. “This year, the McMaster Students Union-led Shinerama campaign has set a goal of $120,000. We want to become the top Shinerama fundraising school in the country.”
The majority of funds raised for Shinerama are secured during McMaster’s annual Welcome Week.
On Wednesday, Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m., the excitement ramps up with the popular McMaster “Shine-Off.” Students will arrive back on campus from the traditional PJ Parade, and music will be playing as the event starts off as a huge dance party.
A “surprise vehicle” will be parked on campus for competing teams of students to shine. Each residence will be represented by a team of two students, and the teams will attempt to get the vehicle as clean as possible while trying to set a new record time.
Wednesday’s event helps generates awareness for the main affair, “Shine Day,” which takes place on Saturday, Sept. 7. During Shine Day, McMaster students will travel all over Hamilton and beyond to raise money for cystic fibrosis by shining shoes, singing songs, selling lollipops and participating in a variety of other creative fundraising initiatives.
