Former war crimes prosecutor speaks to campus crowd

Orono 1

Redemption, triumph and a passion for justice are just a few of the themes of Alfred Orono Orono’s lecture on campus this week.

The former war crimes prosecutor and current UN Women Protection Advisor talked about his life experience and channeled his passion to protect fundamental freedoms and human rights in his Feb. 29 talk to students, staff, faculty and community members.

Discussion topics ranged, with Orono Orono making one point clear: when it comes to human rights, one of the United Nations’ greatest challenges is bringing people to account.

Orono Orono also talked about his past as a child soldier in Uganda, and his experience as a refugee sponsored by the World University Service of Canada.

The lecture was part of the Perspectives on Peace campaign. Upcoming events in the campaign include a workshop on listening with empathy, a lecture on engaged scholarship and a special concert with the McMaster Choir.
