Festival honours spirit of Mahatma Gandhi

“Gandhi was a galvanizing symbol of world peace, and it is fitting to honour his contributions to building peace and the continued relevance of his philosophy today,” says Rama Singh, professor at McMaster University and one of the festival organizers.

The theme of this year's festival is Swadeshi: Gandhi's Economics of Self Reliance, and it will explore connections between peace and the economics of self-reliance and sustainability. Run by McMaster University students to increase peace education, build solidarity among collaborating campus organizations and foster a culture of peace, the festival started with a panel discussion September 29, at St. Paul's Anglican Church.

On October 3, the festival will move to the McMaster Downtown Centre with a Peace and Justice Fair involving of community organizations. An address will be given by Rajmohan Gandhi, an historian and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, followed by a peace walk through downtown Hamilton, a free vegetarian lunch of Indian food, and entertainment. The day marks the 140th anniversary of Gandhi's birthday and also marks the 100th anniversary of Gandhi's seminal book Hind Swaraj (Home Rule).

Gandhi will also deliver a 12th Annual Gandhi Lecture on Friday, October 2 at McMaster University, Health Sciences Centre, Room HSC-1A1 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. He will provide valuable insight into living in harmony with local produce and environmental sustainability.

In addition to McMaster University, other sponsors are the India-Canada Society (Hamilton), and the City of Hamilton.
Admission is free and participants are encouraged to bring banners that support the Economics of Self Reliance, peace and “local before global” as they join the peace walk. For more information, please visit humanities.mcmaster.ca/gandhi.
