Family & friends applaud Engineering graduates

The ceremony will be followed by a reception on campus at the McMaster University Student Centre Marketplace.

The Faculty of Engineering will confer degrees upon 577 students at the Spring Convocation ceremony, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Donald A. Pether, president and CEO of Dofasco, will be presented with an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) Degree and later address the graduates.

Degrees being conferred include: Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Applied Science, Master of Engineering, Master of Science (Computer Science), Bachelor of Engineering and Management, Bachelor of Engineering and Society, Bachelor of Engineering Biosciences, Bachelor of Engineering, and Bachelor of Technology. Diplomas in Nuclear Technology will also be granted.

“We congratulate all the graduates and wish them continued success,” said Mo Elbestawi, dean of engineering. “They can seek inspiration from our honorary degree recipient, Don Pether, who has shown great leadership in industry as well as in society. The Faculty of Engineering, its faculty members and students, have all benefited from his foresight and support.”

Donald A. Pether, Doctor of Laws (LL.D.)

Don Pether is president and chief executive officer of Dofasco, a leading steel producer in Canada and a global industry leader in corporate excellence, environmental responsibility, community leadership and workplace innovation.

As Dofasco's vice president commercial in the 1990's, Pether helped the company move out of the recession with the “Solutions in Steel” strategy. He became president and CEO in 2003 and in 2004, Dofasco achieved record earnings. According to the Financial Post, Dofasco is one of the ten best companies to work for in Canada. It is the only steel company listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. Pether recently guided Dofasco through its acquisition by Arcelor S.A.

Throughout his career, Pether has participated in numerous industry-related associations. He is currently on the Board of Directors and vice-chair of the Canadian Steel Producers' Association. He is vice-chairman and on the Board of the American Iron and Steel Institute, a director of the Canadian Steel Trade and Employment Congress and the International Iron and Steel Institute. Pether is also a member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and a director of the Toronto Region Research Alliance (TRRA).

A member of the McMaster University Board of Governors, Pether also serves on the cabinet for the Athletics and Recreation Centre and stadium campaign. He is a governor of the Art Gallery of Hamilton and co-chair of the Hamilton Civic Coalition.
