Three faculty members were recognized alongside graduating students at
last week's
convocation ceremonies. Karen Finlay was honoured with a President's
Award for
Educational Leadership, while Mandeep Malik and Carlos Filipe received
President's
Awards for Instruction.
“These three award winners have done a great deal to advance the
high level of
education provided at McMaster,” said University President Patrick
Deane. “They should
be proud of the work they are doing and the positive effects it is
having on our
students.”
Karen Finlay is widely recognized to have created a renowned centre
of top-quality
education within the field of radiology at McMaster.
As director of the Radiology Residency Program for the past 10
years, Finlay
created a comprehensive manual that provides critical resources to
achieve program
goals and objectives. She also implemented a computerized format of
the Objective
Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), which has since been adopted
across Canada.
Mandeep Malik received an award for his innovative educational
initiatives,
advocacy for experiential learning, and a natural ability to immerse
students in the
world of marketing.
As an assistant professor in the DeGroote School of Business, Malik
motivates his
students by partnering with them in the process of problem solving, as
well as
promoting lifelong learning, leadership, and social responsibility.
Mandeep created several new experiential learning opportunities
such as the MARS
Apprentice, Canada's Next Top Ad Exec, High School Business Heroes,
Focus 2040,
BizX, and Synergy Summer Camp.
Carlos Filipe, associate professor and associate chair
(undergraduate) in chemical
engineering, was recognized for his enthusiasm for teaching and his
ability to truly
connect with his students.
Filipe implements a different strategy for each of the six
undergraduate courses he
teaches, tailoring his teaching technique according to where students
are in relation to
the course material.
His students say that what really sets him apart from other
instructors is his deep
interest in each individual student. They describe him as a devoted
mentor, a passionate
teacher, and a dedicated supervisor.
