Engineering celebrates achievements at Awards Gala

Photo courtesy of Faculty of Engineering.”]More than 300 faculty members, alumni, students and supporters of the Faculty of Engineering gathered at Liuna Station in Hamilton on Tuesday evening to recognize and celebrate their achievements over the past year.

The evening featured a tribute to more than 50 outstanding engineering alumni who were special guests at the Applause and Accolades Awards Gala in tribute to the Faculty of Engineering's 50th anniversary in 2008.

“We have remarkable alumni who have made outstanding contributions to the Faculty over the past 50 years,” said David Wilkinson, dean of the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster. “Whether through the donation of their time, expertise, leadership or monetarily, all these alumni have helped to shape the Faculty we know today.”

Special honourees during the evening included Carl Fuerst, chief scientist for General Motors of Canada, and Kurt Strobele, president and CEO of Hatch, a global engineering consulting firm based in Mississauga. Fuerst was presented with the Faculty of Engineering Leadership Award and Strobele received the L.W. Shemilt Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award.

More than 30 Engineering faculty members, staff and students who received awards and special recognitions over the past year were also recognized for their achievements.

“Our faculty continually distinguish themselves professionally and academically,” said Wilkinson. “The awards gala provides us with an opportunity to celebrate their success as well as those of our staff and students.”

The Faculty of Engineering Leadership Award was established in 2004 to recognize an outstanding citizen who has contributed to engineering, the University and the community. Past recipients include Joseph Liburdi, president, Liburdi Engineering; Joseph Ng, president, JNE Consulting; Douglas Barber, co-founder, Gennum Corporation; and John Mayberry, former chairman and CEO, Dofasco.

The L.W. Shemilt Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award was established in 2006 to recognize the contributions of leading Faculty alumni. Past recipients include Stephen Elop, president, Microsoft Business Division, and Michael Pley, president, COM DEV have received the Engineering Alumni Award.
