‘Don’t underestimate the power of your peers’

Rebecca Raminhos was in second year when she broke down.

Severe panic attacks led to an overdose of pills, which led to a call to the McMaster Students Union’s Peer Support Line, and a trip to the hospital, where she stayed for an entire month.

Raminhos is doing better now, but is still working on keeping her mental illness under control.

This week, McMaster launched its new Student Mental Health and Well-Being Strategy, which among other things, recommends that the University increase capacity within the Student Wellness Centre to help students like Raminhos.

The Strategy also recommends implementing a coordinated, consistent approach to helping students in difficulty across campus.
