Every dollar raised for the organization translates into $10 worth of food through its Food Recovery Program, which collects donations of surplus food from the food industry and provides it to those in need.
“A lot of [the donations] came from students,” said Rachel O'Reilly, resource development director at Hamilton Food Share.
The department has collected donations for Hamilton Food Share for the past two years.
“Every year, it has grown,” said O'Reilly. “I was totally blown away.”
More than 15,700 people in Hamilton use food banks each month and 40 per cent of those are children under the age of 18.
