Representatives from all levels of government and sister institutions across the
province and country will be at Hamilton Place Friday morning for
the
first of McMaster's fall convocation ceremonies as Patrick Deane is officially installed as
President and Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Deane, who became McMaster's seventh President and Vice-Chancellor on July 1,
2010, will be sworn into office by the Chair of the University's Board of Governors,
Donald
Pether, who will administer the oath of office as part of the ceremony.

The presidents of the McMaster Alumni Association, Faculty Association, National
Automobile, Aerospace Transportation and General Workers' Union of Canada (Local
555),
Graduate Students Association, McMaster Students Union, and McMaster
Association
of Part-time Students, representing the University community, will clothe Deane in the
Presidential robes, a gift of the McMaster University Alumni Association.

Greetings will be presented on behalf of a number of organizations, including the
federal, provincial and local governments, Canadian and Ontario sister institutions,
Mohawk College, McMaster's faculty, students and non-teaching staff.

The ceremony will also include the playing of Flourish by installation trumpeters, a
musical piece that has only been performed once before, and a performance by opera
soprano Adrianne Pieczonka, who along with former governor of the Bank of Canada
David
Dodge, will be receiving an honorary degree.

“The installation is an important ceremony with rich tradition at McMaster,” said
Acting University Registrar Melissa Pool. “It's not something that happens every day, so
it's
very
exciting to be a part of it.”

More than 1000 students will convoke at the ceremonies, scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
and
2:30 p.m. in Hamilton Place's Great Hall. They will also be the first McMaster
convocation ceremonies to be webcast live on the internet. The live feed and archived
video can be found
