The McMaster Alumni Association (MAA) helped the University's next President get ready for his move to Hamilton last night at an event held in Kingston, Ont.
Area McMaster alumni, as well as staff, students and faculty at Queen's University, joined the MAA in celebrating Deane's time at Queen's as well as wishing him luck in his new role at McMaster. MAA staff also began preparing Deane for the transition to Hamilton, with help from David Adames, executive director of Tourism Hamilton and incoming MAA president.
“It's important for members of the alumni community to be able to meet the University's next President,” said Karen McQuigge, director of alumni advancement. “And at an event like this they can also help to welcome him to the community he's about to become a part of.”
In addition to Adames' overview of the city, the event included a video presentation of tips for becoming McMaster's President as well as remarks from Deane, who in a recent op-ed published in the Queen's Gazette wrote that he feels “a sense of privilege and excitement” about his move to McMaster.
Currently the vice-principal (Academic) at Queen's University, Deane will become McMaster's seventh President on July 1, 2010. The native of South Africa will succeed current President Peter George, who will complete his 15th year as in the position on June 30 after 45 years at the University.
