Dean of Students to take on Business prof in volleyball showdown

McMaster's Dean of Students Sean Van Koughnett will take on Nick Bontis, associate professor in the DeGroote School of Business, in a celebrity volleyball game Tuesday.


It has been more than a year in the planning, but McMaster Athletics and Recreation is ready to host the 50th Anniversary CIS Men’s Volleyball Championship, presented by the Leggat Auto Group from March 10-12.

The first event, of what will be a week of activities, will happen on Tuesday, March 8, at 12 p.m. with the CIS Celebrity Volleyball Challenge.    

The honourary team captains are McMaster luminaries Sean Van Koughnett and Nick Bontis, and they will be joined by personalities from the Hamilton and McMaster media and sports fields to kick-off the championship week as they play on the main court in the Burridge Gym.  Spectators are welcome and admission is free to watch the CIS Celebrity Volleyball Challenge.

On Wednesday, March 9th, the 2016 CIS All-Canadian Breakfast will be held at 7:30 a.m. at the Hamilton Sheraton Hotel, as Canadian Interuniversity Sport recognizes the 2016 first and second-team All-Canadians, the All-Rookie team, and the major award recipients for men’s volleyball.

Thursday, March 10th sees the tournament get started with quarterfinal matches scheduled for 1 and 3 p.m. in the afternoon session, followed by the evening session with matches at 6 and 8 p.m.

The host McMaster Marauders will play their opening match on Thursday at 8 p.m.

The CIS Volleyball Championship FanFest will also open in the Sport Hall of the David Braley Athletic Centre on March 10th with interactive games and activities for fans of all ages.

The full tournament draw will be announced by Canadian Interuniversity Sport on Sunday, March 6th at 8 p.m. (EST).
