Dean of social sciences reappointed through 2025

Jeremiah Hurley has been reappointed as McMaster’s dean of social sciences for a second five-year term, beginning July 1, 2020.

Since his appointment in 2015, Hurley, a professor and the former chair of economics, has focused on improving the fiscal situation of the Faculty of Social Sciences, strengthening its research and enhancing the student experience.

“Over the past five years, the Faculty of Social Sciences has made tremendous investments in the future of its research and educational programming,” says acting Provost and Vice-President Academic Susan Searls Giroux.

“The dean has provided the Faculty with the vision and direction to maintain its position among Canada’s leading social science educators into the future.”

Under Hurley’s leadership, the Faculty of Social Sciences has stabilized its fiscal situation, increased research activities and reversed enrolment declines while raising the entrance standard.

“The faculty is in a different place than it was in 2015,” Hurley says.

“I envision the next term will involve more conscious investments in strategic priorities that will move us forward in terms of our programming and research.”

Hurley will mark the start of his second term with a strategic planning exercise to engage faculty, staff and students.

“I look forward to hearing ideas on how, together, we can ensure a stable, sustainable future, strengthen the Faculty’s research culture and capacity with an emphasis on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and foster an inclusive, collaborative working and learning environment.”
