John Capone has been reappointed to a second five-year term as McMaster's dean of science. Both the Senate and Board of Governors have approved the appointment.

“Dr. Capone has shown great leadership and initiative during his first term,” says Ilene Busch-Vishniac, provost and vice-president Academic and chair of the selection committee that recommended a second term for the dean. “His many achievements as dean and his plans to advance the Faculty of Science in the future were key reasons the committee supported his reappointment.”

During his first term, the Faculty of Science successfully developed new undergraduate and graduate programs, restructured some existing ones, and significantly expanded graduate enrolment and research activity. At the same time, the faculty delivered a series of in-year operating budget surpluses.

Capone oversaw the transition of the Department of Kinesiology into the Faculty, and led the restructuring of Level I science into direct entry streams. The Faculty also conceptualized and launched the innovative and unique Integrated Science (iSci) program during this time.

“I am delighted to be given the opportunity to continue working with the outstanding faculty, staff and students in the Faculty of Science to further foster McMaster's reputation for excellence in science,” Capone says. “I'm looking forward to continuing to build on our considerable strengths and innovation in education and research, to enhance student experience, and to capture new opportunities as we strive to be among the very best at what we do.

John Capone arrived at McMaster in 1978 as a PhD student. He then spent three years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before rejoining McMaster as an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry in 1986. He was appointed a full professor in 1995 and from 1997 to 2000 served as chair of the department. Prior to becoming dean, he was associate dean, research, in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
