The lecture is co-sponsored by the Faculty of Engineering and the Department of Physical Plant. It will take place at 10 a.m. in the Michael G. DeGroote Centre of Learning and Discovery, Rm. 1305/1307.

A respected geneticist, and an outspoken activist in the field of environmental sustainability, David Suzuki is best known as the host of CBC's science series The Nature of Things.

Suzuki's visit coincides with the mid-way point of a campus-wide initiative known as the Campus Renewal Partnership, aimed at improving air quality and energy efficiency in McMaster's buildings. This joint project of McMaster's Department of Physical Plant and Ameresco Canada is the largest capital per-square-foot investment of its kind in Canada, covering 5-million square feet and costing $28-million. McMaster is the only Ontario university to embark on a project of this scope. Energy savings of $776,000 have already been attained, as has a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by about 25 per cent (exceeding Kyoto Protocol's requirement of 20 per cent). When the project is finished, annual energy savings are expected to be $1.5-million.

A question and answer period with David Suzuki, along with a book signing, will take place after the lecture.

Tickets are free, and can be picked up at the John Hodgins Engineering Building, Room 201. Pending availability, tickets can be obtained at the venue at 9:45 a.m. on the day of the lecture.
