CSD changes its name to Health Research Services

The Faculty of Health Sciences department known for more than 30 years as the Committee on Scientific Development (CSD) has changed its name to Health Research Services.

The new name more accurately reflects the role of the department as it has evolved over time.

CSD was established in the mid-1970s to support all research administration activities for the Faculty of Health Sciences. As the research mandate of the Faculty has grown over the decades and expanded into new areas of collaboration, the constituency of the CSD has also grown. Today, there are research collaborations with McMaster's faculties of science, social sciences and engineering as well as affiliated academic hospital partners, Hamilton Health Sciences and St Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton.

In addition, the level of external funding received by the Faculty has grown from approximately $49 million in 1996-97 to over $100 million in 2006-07. Last year, the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada ranked McMaster second in research funding for all medical schools in Canada.

To coincide with the name change, Health Research Services has launched a new website: http://www.fhs.mcmaster.ca/healthresearch/.

The new site offers McMaster researchers detailed information about grant application and award processes, funding opportunities and policies.

Services offered by Health Research Services:

Identification of funding opportunities for faculty members

Grant application submission processes

Funding agreement review and finalization

Account opening and verification of compliance certification

Support of research ethics review processes

Management of equipment, space and associated databases

Evaluation of research performance using standard metrics (competition success rates, number and funded amount of research projects, etc.)
