And now, more than ever, our world is in need of responsible leaders. But what do we mean when we speak of leaders and leadership in the 21st century?

Certainly, leadership is defined not simply in terms of a person or a position, but in terms of a collaborative process which engages both leaders and participants as they work towards meaningful change.

Understanding leadership as a collaborative process will be one of several themes examined in the first annual Canadian Institute on Student Leadership (CISL) hosted at McMaster University from Thursday, May 8 to Sunday, May 11.

Bringing together present and prospective leaders from colleges and universities across Canada, the Institute will empower university and college students, staff and faculty to explore and develop their leadership abilities and to discover, reflect and renew the principles of leadership, helping and citizenship.
Fifty students, staff and faculty from across Canada will be participating in the three-day event.

The curriculum includes case studies, expert faculty in residence, the use of open space to facilitate deep discussion and learning, keynote presentations on emerging trends and approaches to student leadership, and the opportunity to implement what was collaboratively created at home institutions.
