Not a common request, but this week all Canadians are invited to leave their cars at home for the annual Commuter Challenge happening May 31 to June 6, 2009.
Hosted by the City of Hamilton and McMaster's Office of Sustainability, the Challenge aims to demonstrate how individual actions impact community health. This year, members of the McMaster community are asked once again to explore more environmentally-friendly modes of transportation which can reduce roadway congestion, green house gas emissions, and dependency on oil.
“As one of Hamilton's largest employers, McMaster can make a big difference through the Commuter Challenge,” said Karen Belaire, McMaster vice-president administration. “If this event helps people become more open to commuting through different means of transportation, not just single-occupancy vehicles, then it will be a great success.”
McMaster plays a significant role in Hamilton's Commuter Challenge. Last year the University won the Challenge with 711 participants, and this time they are hoping for at least 750 eco-friendly commuters.
The week's festivities began Friday with a free pancake breakfast and Active Transport Fair. Events continue throughout the week with the Commuter Challenge tent located in the Student Centre courtyard between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day. The tent features free bike repairs from MACycle Co-op, trip planning, workshops and more information about the Challenge.
Registration continues until Saturday, June 6. Participants can register and log commutes on the National Commuter Challenge website. Registration includes admission to the week's events, as well as free use of the Jackson Square Good Life Fitness throughout the week, half price admission to the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and free use of Hamilton Street Railway transit on Thursday, June 4. Just remember to wear your Commuter Challenge bracelet. For more information visit the Office of Sustainability here or visit the City of Hamilton's website.
