Sean Lemon knows all about the positive effects scholarships, bursaries and awards have on student recipients.

Thanks to the generosity of the McMaster community nearly 75 per cent of Lemon's tuition was paid for this year, allowing him to focus on the most important aspects of his education.

Lemon, whose extracurricular activities are as varied as playing for the varsity baseball team and working with the Book-Writing Club for Children, says that without the support of the community he may not have been able to pursue his academic interests.

"I don't have to constantly worry about how I'll fund my education," he said. "It's a great relief."

February 4 marks the kick-off of the month-long Community Campaign, which highlights the impact of financial gifts from McMaster's faculty and staff. The kick-off event, featuring Lemon, cake, refreshments and prizes, will take place at 1 p.m. in the Student Centre Marketplace.

The month's activities also include the sale of treat-a-grams for colleagues, which help fund student awards at McMaster, as well as Doors Open tours of unique spaces on campus.

"I definitely want to give back to McMaster once I'm established in my career," said Lemon, in his third year of a combined Arts & Science and economics degree. "It makes you feel like you're part of something bigger than yourself - a network of students and alumni."

Lemon has also been the recipient of an Undergraduate Student Research Award, with which he assessed the environmental, economic and social impacts of the Ontario government's plan for electric vehicles.
