The University and CUPE Local 3906 Unit 1, which represents part-time Teaching and some Research Assistants (those who receive a Research Assistantship in lieu of a Teaching Assistantship), are making progress towards a new collective agreement and have scheduled more bargaining sessions for September.

The current collective agreement expires August 31, but the parties have agreed to continue negotiating beyond that date. The University and union met through July and August and six more full days of negotiations are confirmed for next month: September 1, 3, 14, 16, 28 and 30.

Agreement has been reached on a significant portion of the contract language. Earlier this month, the University tabled its monetary proposal, which provides a total compounded wage increase of 4.46% over three years. Teaching Assistants and Research Assistants are part-time employees who work an average of 10 hours per week for a maximum of 260 hours in an academic year.

At the end of the University's proposed three-year contract, hourly rates for graduate student Teaching and Research Assistants would increase to $39.50/hour from the current rate of $38.00/hour. Rates for undergraduate Teaching Assistants would rise to $22.70/hour from the current rate of $20.75/hour.
