Do you have an idea to help change the world or make someone’s life easier? Can you code?

Hack for Change is the theme of student club HackIt Mac’s upcoming hackathon, taking place Feb. 14-15.

Hackathons are creative coding marathons where individuals create new concepts, web apps and other projects.

At this one, participants will be required to create something that affects positive change.

Students in all disciplines are welcome, regardless of their knowledge of code. Groups of up to four students can come with an existing idea or create a new one on the spot.

“People know there are a lot of things out there that need to change, but sometimes they don’t know how to implement it,” says Prakhar Garg, a third year Mechatronics Engineering student who is helping to organize the event. “Our hackathon brings those people with the engineers who know how to implement things and if they can work together, you have a really amazing product that you know is needed but haven’t really got around to making.”

The HackIt Mac community has attended a number of hackathons and late last year took home 3rd and 8th place at YHack, a hackathon hosted by Yale.

If students are interested in the competition and want to sharpen their coding skills, HackIt Mac hosts weekly code nights and workshops for introductory HTML & CSS on Mondays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in IAHS room 201.
