On Monday, Jan. 29, CMA Ontario presented a $30,000 cheque to Paul
Bates, dean of the DeGroote School of Business. This sponsorship will support two research projects: the first will assess effectiveness of governance in the healthcare sector, and the second will be a study on how quality of corporate governance affects liquidity in the equity market in regard to quarterly earnings announcements.
“The strengthened partnership with CMA Ontario will enable DeGroote faculty members to conduct research, curriculum development and seminars to support excellence in the study and practice of strategic management accounting,” said Bates. “The funding will create education and research programs that will benefit the accounting profession.”
David Hipgrave, president and Chief Executive Officer of CMA Ontario, said, “Strategic management accounting is a rapidly expanding field, attracting greatly increasing employer and student interest alike. We are honoured to have the opportunity to invest in the growth of management accounting education at DeGroote and McMaster, and to support the original research initiatives of DeGroote accounting faculty on topics of vital business and public interest.”
DeGroote and the Certified Management Accountants have a number of partnerships, in addition to the new research sponsorship. The Management Accounting MBA stream at DeGroote allows students to earn their CMA designation concurrently with their MBA. McMaster has hosted the annual CMA case competition two years in a row. And DeGroote students achieved the highest marks in the province on their Certified Management Accounting entry exams.
The Certified Management Accountants of Ontario is a self-governing professional organization that awards the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation to qualified candidates in Ontario.
