City of Hamilton launches new community web portal

The official launch of a new community portal called myhamilton.ca takes place today (Tuesday, Sept. 13), offering new levels of convenience and service for the Hamilton communityC4040-121, including McMaster University.
The portal serves as a gateway to community resources, services and information in eight categories:
- Arts, Sports & Recreation
- Business & Industry
- Communities & Organizations
- Education & Careers
- City & Government (the former City of140-420 Hamilton site)
- Health & Environment
- Tourism & Visitor Information
- Library Services (the former Hamilton Public Library site)
Within these categories, users can sign up for local recreation programs, consult a comprehensive business directory, find educational program opportunities, explore new careers, purchase dog licences, locate a flu clinic, discover upcoming festivals and apply for a library card. Visitors to the site can customize the display of information and access community collaboration space and join online discussions.
“The powerful myhamilton.ca search engine brings Hamilton related information to one central location,” says Ken Roberts, myhamilton.ca co-director. “Hamiltonians will benefit from personal time and money saved with round-the-clock, on-demand delivery of local services and information.”
The public launch of myhamilton.ca takes place on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the double-header football game at Ivor Wynne Stadium. The McMaster Marauders play Western at 2:30 p.m. followed by the Ti-Cats vs. Calgary game at 7 p.m.
myhamilton.ca is offering a special incentive to visit the site and get a free user name. Each day from September 13-16, 50 people will win tickets to the September 17 double-header game. Winners will be randomly selected from the list of portal user names. Listen to Y108/CHML for daily winner announcements.
The project is a collaborative effort of more than 40 community partners, including McMaster University.
McMaster's chief information officer Debbie Barrett and associate librarian Vivian Lewis have contributed to the development of the portal as members of the project steering committee. Marketing advice was provided by Jayne Johnston, Office of Public
Relations. Research on the use of the portal will be conducted by Brian Detlor and a team from the DeGroote School of Business.
