Health minister Ujjal Dosanjh announced the largest health research grant made by CIHR to date – 1,600 in health research grants across Canada worth more than $354 million, of which $138 million will fund projects in Ontario.

One of three scientist highlighted in a press release issued Wednesday about the funding was McMaster's Karen Mossman, an assistant professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, who is investigating how viruses such as SARS and avian influenza interact with their hosts.

“Health research is one of Canada's major engines of productivity, economic growth, and global competitiveness for the 21st century, driving the development of new products and services, attracting investment and creating jobs for Canada's highly trained workforce,” said CIHR president, Alan Bernstein. “CIHR is proud to support the work of outstanding investigators in universities, hospitals and research.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research is the Government of Canada's agency for health research.
