McMaster's management training program CALM has once again been recognized for
its innovative teaching and training methods.

The Canadian Society for Training and Development has given the University's
Certificate in Advanced Leadership & Management (CALM) program one of its 2010
Awards for Training Excellence.

The awards honour innovative, Canadian-developed learning products and programs.

“We're extremely proud to be recognized with this award,” said Nancy Buschert,
program manager for CALM. “We've put a great deal of work into developing a program
that prepares University managers for the future, and this award recognizes the very
high quality of that program.”

CALM, which is delivered by McMaster's Centre for Continuing Education, is a cohort-
based program that combines classroom learning with real-world challenges that have
been identified by senior leaders as strategically important to the University.

The program brings together managers from across the University to explore
management and leadership development theories and best practices through action
learning.

Participants in the program work in small groups to solve real-world problems and
apply learning from CALM directly to their projects to develop innovations and
efficiencies for the University. A project from CALM's pilot offering has resulted in a
new procurement plan for office supplies and paper which is projected to save the
University $2.3-million over five years and reduce its carbon footprint through
reductions in packaging and deliveries.

The Centre for Continuing Education is the country's largest university continuing
education provider of corporate training. In addition to McMaster University, the Centre
provides corporate training services to the Government of Alberta, ArcellorMitall
Dofasco, the City of Hamilton, Cadbury and other organizations.
