The Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) has launched its fall promotion, the Map Your Future contest, to raise awareness of the professional education opportunities it offers, including certificate and diploma programs, corporate training and general interest courses.
“As Canadian workers, we have fallen far behind our counterparts in some other countries with respect to engaging in job-related education and training,” said Tracey Taylor-O'Reilly, director of the CCE.
According to a recent report by the Canadian Council on Learning, less than 30 percent of adult workers in Canada participate in job-related education and training, compared to almost 35 percent in the UK and nearly 45 percent in the US. This is partially because Canadian employers don't invest in training the way US employers do. As a percentage of their overall payroll, US firms spend about 50 percent more on training than Canadian firms.
“We want to make it easier for people to participate in continuing education,” said Taylor-O'Reilly. “We offer afternoon, evening and weekend classes, online and self-directed distance programs to try to help people meet the demands of modern life and continue to learn and grow professionally. We also offer a variety of diploma and training programs that can be customized for employers.”
Lisa Boniface, assistant director of CCE, added, “McMaster University is a leader as an employer who supports continuing education. As employees, we have extensive benefits available to support us in pursuing formal education and training.”
McMaster was recently awarded the inaugural Workplace Training Award by the Human Resources Committee of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce and Mohawk College.
“Our certificates and diplomas are in-depth programs providing knowledge and practical information in a range of focus areas, including business, health and social services and applied sciences,” said Taylor-O'Reilly. “What sets us apart from other institutions is that when you complete a certificate or diploma program, you are eligible to apply for advanced credit toward degree studies or a professional designation, if that is part of your journey.”
