Canoes, carrots, bikes and Batman: First years find much to discover in Hamilton

Victory Gardens

Incoming students spent a day picking vegetables at Hamilton Victory Gardens this week. The project was part of new orientation activities designed to get students off campus and into the surrounding community.

More than 500 first year students travelled off campus this week to get to know the city they now call home.

Orientation activities this year included bike tours of Bayfront Park and the Dundas Rail Trail, a tour of Dundas, just west of campus, and a photography hike to Westdale’s Aviary.

More than 300 students also took in the Batman thriller The Dark Knight at Westdale Theatre and 150 more dipped their paddles into the waters of Cootes Paradise.

A small group of students even harvested nearly 1,000 pounds of produce from Hamilton Victory Gardens for local food banks and hot meal programs.

Welcome Week events continue throughout the week with concerts in Faculty Hollow, MACademics sessions, Clubsfest, IRIS drama, Faculty Night, PJ Parade and more.
