The Canadian Gymnastics Championships, happening at the David Braley Athletic Centre from May 28 to June 6, 2009.

The Championship is the largest gymnastic event in Hamilton's history, and co-ordinators expect over 1000 participants from across Canada. Among the competitors are Jason Burnett of Toronto and Karen Cockburn of Stouffville, both silver medalists in trampoline from the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics. Although not every gymnast present has graced the Olympic podium, many young hopefuls have the potential to compete for Canada in the 2012 Olympics in London.

“We are really happy with the competition so far, it's been running smoothly all week,” said Kelllie Hinnells, event co-chair for the Canadian Gymnastics Championships. “McMaster's facilities have been great and the staff here are incredibly accommodating.”

The Championship features four gymnastic disciplines: rhythmic, trampoline and tumbling, and men's and women's artistic. Six events make up the men's artistic discipline including pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, horizontal bars and floor exercise. The women's artistic discipline differs slightly with only four events: vault, uneven bars, floor and beam, all accompanied by music.

Although the four disciplines fit under the larger gymnastics umbrella, this is only the second time that each national championship will occur in the same place at the same time.

Everyone is welcome to watch the gymnasts while they make history at McMaster. The competition runs throughout the week, with finals beginning Saturday, June 6 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are available at the door. For more information please visit the Canadian Gymnastics Championship web site.
