The McMaster Campus
Ministries Council
is turning 40 and is celebrating with a talk by former Canadian
Senator Lois Wilson.

The council, a group of volunteers including students, staff and faculty, serves as an
advisory board to the Ecumenical Chaplaincy, which responds to certain needs within
the University community. According to chaplain Carol Wood, the group is an
important on-campus resource.

“We have to be responsive to the needs of the community, especially students,” said
Wood. “We help in the community, we promote anti-violence and we work alongside
other faith traditions to help those in need in any way we can.”

Throughout its 40-year history, the council and Ecumenical Chaplaincy have provided
bereavement support for students, help with developing study skills and de-stressing
activities.

Volunteers also help organize events and campaigns in support of social justice issues,
such as a clothing drive to benefit clients of Hamilton's Living Rock Ministries or the
Change for Japan fundraiser currently being run on campus.

“We want to continue to connect and collaborate campus-wide,” said Wood. “That's
how we've managed to remain relevant on a very diverse, pluralistic campus.”

The Wilson talk is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. in Gilmour Hall 111, after a presentation on
the history of the McMaster Campus Ministries Council. Wilson, an ordained minister,
will talk about the evolving role of the chaplaincy in a multi-faith context.
