Student accommodations due to internet outage

Nov. 26 – 7:30 p.m.: The internet line cut by a crew working several kilometres from campus has been repaired and internet and email service has been restored.

In order to ensure students have appropriate time to complete assignments due during the outage, extensions have been granted:

Assignments originally due New due date
Tuesday Nov. 26 Thursday Nov. 28
Wednesday Nov. 27 Friday Nov. 29
Thursday Nov. 28 Friday Nov. 29

Assignments that were due at 11:59 p.m. Nov. 25 will be due Thursday, Nov. 28.

These extensions remain in effect now that the outage has been resolved.

Student testing will continue as scheduled. The test ban (originally scheduled to begin Nov. 28) will be waived so that testing of students can be accommodated as deemed appropriate by the instructor in consultation with the Associate Dean in the Faculty.

In some instances, classes that required an internet connection may have been rescheduled. Faculty members will be flexible in accommodating student needs during this period.

 

3:30 p.m.: McMaster continues to experience disruptions in internet and email service. The main internet line was cut by a crew working several kilometres from campus. Although we’ve been in constant contact with the internet company it remains unclear when the connection will be restored.

Our best information is that the internet should be restored sometime today. Regardless of when the connection is restored, the decisions on assignment dates and testing will remain in effect.

12:00 p.m.: As of noon, the external service provider is still fixing the severed line located off campus. This severed line has disrupted internet and email access across campus. Avenue to Learn is also impacted.

All student assignments due today (Nov. 26) have been granted a 24 hour extension.

Campus users continue to have difficulties accessing external websites, email and connecting to some McMaster sites.

Faculty, staff and students in University locations other than the Westdale campus are unable to access McMaster email and the web.

Off campus users are unable to access some McMaster sites.

Hourly updates are being posted to the Daily News and McMaster’s Facebook and Twitter pages, which can be accessed through non-McMaster networks or on a mobile device.

11:00 a.m.: Due to the internet and email service disruption, deadlines for student assignments due today will be extended 24 hours. Students will soon receive an email from Provost David Wilkinson indicating the extension.
