Alumnus Quentin Broad has thrown down a $10,000 gauntlet.

The 1988 graduate of the DeGroote School of Business’ MBA program has challenged his classmates and other alumni to grow the Greg Brophy Memorial Scholarship in Principled Leadership – a challenge he kicked off with a $10,000 donation.

Broad was instrumental in establishing the scholarship, which gives two MBA students $1,000 each year, five years ago.

His goal is to grow the scholarship significantly, so more MBA students can benefit from the financial support.

“It’s been 25 years since I graduated from the DeGroote School of Business. To mark the occasion, I wanted to continue giving back to the School that created such a strong foundation for my career. The education that I received at McMaster and the relationships that I built while studying at DeGroote have shaped many of the successes I have experienced in my career,” says Broad, who is managing director at CIBC World Markets.

In addition to the MBA class of 1988, alumni from all other DeGroote School of Business classes have been challenged to increase support to students by making donations to the new DeGroote Experience Fund.

The newly established fund is used to help students participate in conferences, competitions and other events where they can learn through experience.

“Funding allows students to participate in valuable experiential learning opportunities outside the classroom. Case competitions, business plan competitions, workshops and conferences all allow students to practice and refine their skills,” says business school dean Len Waverman. “All donations add up. Even if you’ve never contributed before, I hope that our alumni from all years consider giving to help create opportunities for students to develop the skills and experience they need.”

Vince Dong BCom ’83 and the MBA class of 2013 have already given $10,000 and $20,000 respectively to the DeGroote Experience Fund.

The challenge runs until Tuesday, Nov. 5.
