An agreement has been reached between Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital and McMaster University, making the hospital a clinical education campus.

The agreement means the Burlington hospital will see a significant increase in student physicians, medical residents and other health care learners from the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Eric Vandewall, president and CEO of Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, feels the designation is a true reflection of a new era at the hospital, as it marks another stage in the facility’s quest to become a major community teaching hospital affiliated with McMaster.

“The clinical education campus designation is a testament to our commitment of providing compassionate care to our patients and an exceptional environment for teaching. We will continue to evolve and grow this strategic partnership with the university in the future,” said Vandewall.

The hospital has hosted McMaster learners for some time, supporting more than 3,500 medical teaching days a year. Although officials could not say exactly how many more medical students and residents of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine will now undertake training at Joseph Brant, it’s “a significant increase,” said Alan Neville, associate dean, education for the Faculty of Health Sciences.

“Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital is enlarging its educational mission, and bringing in new learners will be a benefit for the people of the community. At the same time, this hospital is an excellent place for our students to learn valuable skills and the breadth of practice.”

In addition to medical residents, there will be McMaster students in nursing, rehabilitation and other health care fields learning at the clinical education campus.

The University has invested more than $460,000 in new call rooms and work spaces for the students at the North Shore Boulevard facility.

John Kelton, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences, added: “We have a win-win-win here for McMaster, the hospital and the community.”
