Brian Haynes appointed to the Order of Canada

Brian Haynes is among 74 new appointees to the Order of Canada announced this week by Michaelle Jean, Governor General of Canada. Haynes will be an Officer of the Order of Canada.
The appointment is a prestigious addition to the national recognition Haynes has received for his contributions in medical information research and for advancing evidence-based medicine in Canada and abroad.
The Order of Canada is the centrepiece of Canada's honours system. To become an Officer recognizes a lifetime of outstanding achievement and merit of a high degree, especially in service to Canada or to humanity at large.
A professor in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the Department of Medicine, Haynes is chief of the Health Information Research Unit at McMaster and a member of CLARITY (Clinical Advances through Research and Information Translation). He is also a staff physician at Hamilton Health Sciences' Diabetes Care and Research Centre.
His main research interests are in improving health and health care through enhancing the validation, distillation, dissemination and application of health care knowledge. Of particular interest are studies of the nature of information problems that afflict practitioners, patients, the public and policy-makers, and trials of potential solutions from information technology.
Haynes sees the honour as recognition of the importance and impact of his area of study.
“My colleagues, staff, students and I hope to accelerate the flow of sound clinical research evidence into health care practice that will save many lives,” he said. “We are trying to develop, test and deploy better means to support evidence-based decisions by practitioners and patients. McMaster is a simply terrific environment for engaging in this quest.”
The new appointments to the Order of Canada included three Companions, 18 Officers and 53 Members. The appointments were made on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada.
Recipients will be invited to accept their insignia at a ceremony to be held later this year.
