We wanted you to be aware that following an extensive investigation, Hamilton police have arrested a McMaster student in connection with the fire at Brandon Hall.

The fire has been a frightening experience for students and their families and friends. It has been made much more shocking because it was deliberately set and now because a McMaster student has been charged in connection with the case.

Charged with one count of arson, endanger to human life and one count arson to property is Emerson Pardoe, 19-years old, a first-year student and resident of Brandon Hall. The University has suspended Mr. Pardoe.

One of McMaster's greatest strengths is its close-knit sense of community. We know that an event like this can lead to questions and concerns.

Additional counseling is available for Brandon residents through the Centre for Student Development csd@mcmaster.ca (ext. 24711). In addition, over the next few days Residence staff and Community Assistants (CAs) who are living with students at area hotels will continue to provide ongoing support and information.

McMaster is thankful that police were able to complete their investigation so quickly. Students were very helpful and co-operative in this regard and their assistance is greatly appreciated.

Now that an arrest has been made, we hope students will be able to fully refocus on their studies.

The University continues to do everything it can to expedite the restoration of Brandon Hall for occupancy as quickly as possible. Please continue to monitor the Daily News website for updates and information regarding the restoration. Any questions you may have can be sent to daily@mcmaster.ca

Sincerely

The Crisis Management Group
