If you noticed more bicycles on campus this morning, that's because McMaster University took part in Smart Commute Hamilton's Bike to Work Day today.

Bike to Work Day encourages Hamiltonians to get out and explore the city's vast and dynamic cycling network as they make their work commutes. Prizes, t-shirts, and healthy snacks were provided at various locations on campus to participants.

Cycling groups traveled a number of organized routes throughout the morning, with group leaders helping to ensure cyclists arrived at work safely.

Cycling through an urban area can be intimidating, so below are some tips to help make your sustainable commute a safe one too.

  • Remember the basics: wear a helmet, don't travel on sidewalks and use hand signals
  • Always be on the lookout for doors opening on parked cars
  • Stick to the side of the road – the fewer cars that have to maneuver around you, the smaller the risk of injury
  • Be careful of sewer grates – some of them are large enough to trap your tires
  • Communicate with other bicyclists and pedestrians
  • More information is available at www.smartcommute.ca. Updates are also being posted by the Office of Sustainability.
