Hill

Author Lawrence Hill, left, speaks with students and community members September 3 outside the John Hodgins Engineering building. Hill's novel The Book of Negroes is this year's Common Reading Program selection.

Author and Westdale native Lawrence Hill will visit McMaster Sept. 3 to discuss his best-selling novel and this year’s Common Reading Program selection The Book of Negroes and his latest book Blood: The Stuff of Life, to be published this fall.

Graduate students, staff, faculty and members of the community will have an opportunity learn about Blood: The Stuff of Life from noon to 2 p.m. outside the John Hodgins Engineering building as part of Graduate Student Week.

At 5:30 p.m., first-year students, faculty, staff and members of the community are invited to listen to Hill recite a passage from The Book of Negroes and learn how the novel was recently adapted into a screenplay for a TV mini-series scheduled for production in Nova Scotia and South Africa this fall.

Illustrated editions of The Book of Negroes, complete with paintings and historical documents, will be available for purchase.

Daniel Coleman, professor of English and Cultural Studies at McMaster will facilitate the conversation in both sessions.

“Connecting with students is incredibly gratifying,” says Hill, who spent time as a writer-in-residence at McMaster in 2008. “Students tend to remember the books they read and love vividly.”

Students registered for the Common Reading Program receive a free illustrated edition of the book and can take part in various activities as part of the shared reading experience. First-year students can still register for the Common Reading Program on OSCARplus and those interested in attending The Book of Negroes event, can register here.

Those who wish to join the conversation about Blood: The Stuff of Life can register here. Both novels will be available for purchase at each session (debit or credit) and time will be allotted for autographs at the end of the program. For more information on Lawrence Hill, visit lawrencehill.com.
