Tensions heightened between North and South Korea last week when the North fired
dozens of shells at the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong, forcing many of its
residents to flee.

According to Richard Stubbs, professor political science, events like this are a
direct result of the way the Korean War ended. Below, he explains why events that took
place in the middle of the last century still have consequences today.
