The area, located between the McMaster University Student Centre (MUSC), Michael G. DeGroote School of Business (MGD), Kenneth Taylor Hall (KTH), Chester New Hall (CNH) and Togo Salmon Hall (TSH), will undergo four phases of construction over the next four years. Phase 1 involves the area between MGD and KTH. This area has had leaks to the basement areas below the deck over the last few years and as a result had been identified as a priority for remediation. The first phase of the project is scheduled to begin June 6, 2005.

“As many people know this space is rather stark in comparison to the many wonderful spaces that can be found elsewhere on the campus,” said project manager Joe Medeiros. “It was decided that this project landed itself to an opportunity to create a unique space within this area. Therefore a landscape architect by the name of Virginia Burt of Visionscapes Landscapes Architects Inc. was sought to create a gathering space that is both inviting and calming.”

The four phases of construction.

Burt's design for the Arts Quad is to create a space that has the theme of a winding river with interesting elements, and resting islands along and within its banks.

An information meeting will take place May 26 at 10 a.m. in TSH B105. Everyone interested and especially working in the area that might be impacted by this project is invited to attend this presentation, which will outline the scope of the project and highlight the impact of this project.
